Install Xrdp in Ubuntu 18.04

xrdp is a free and open-source implementation of Microsoft RDP server that enables operating systems other than Microsoft Windows to provide a fully functional RDP-compatible remote desktop experience. 

In this article, we will cover how to install and Configure xrdp on Ubuntu 18.04

Before You Begin

 

Add the below repository and ensure that your system is up to date:

 

sudo add-apt-repository universe

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Once the update is completed, we will start with xrdp installation.

Installing and configure Xrdp

Step 1: Now install the Xfce desktop environment on your server using the below command

sudo apt install xfce4 xfce4-goodies

Step 2: Select <Yes> on the below prompt, if shown

Step 3: Using the below command install xrdp

apt -get install xrdp

Step 4: After the installation you need to use the below command to tell xRDP to use your environment

sudo sed -i.bak '/fi/a #xrdp multiple users configuration \n xfce-session \n' /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh

Step 5: Allow Rdp port in the ubuntu firewall using the below command

sudo ufw allow 3389/tcp

Step 6: Once you finish all the above steps restart the Xrdp Service and check if it is running.

systemctl restart xrdp
systemctl status xrdp

Step 7: It is recommended not to allow root user logins in xrdp

Using the below commands create a user without sudo permission to use xrdp

adduser <username>

(type the user name if you wont add)set your desired password and details for the created user as shown in the below

In case if you added the user  wrongly, you can remove the user using the below command

sudo deluser  --remove-home  <username>

(replace the <username> with the name of the user you want to delete)

 

Step 8: To access XRDP Windows users can use  “Remote Desktop Connection”

Press Ctrl +R to open the Run and type mstsc to open the Remote Desktop Connection

Step 9: Provide your IP on the dialog box shown below and click connect

You’ll get the below screen asking for Username and password

Type the username and password you’ve created in Step 7

Once you logged, after showing this screen, it’s important to  select Use default  Config as shown in the below prompt

Once it is done, you should able to view the Xfce desktop environment with GUI

 

How to install firefox and Google chrome in Ubuntu

 

You can Install browsers like firefox or chrome in your Xfce desktop

 

Install Firefox:-

You can install Firefox using the below command

apt-get install firefox

 

Install Google chrome:-

First, install gdebi-core using the below command, it lets you install local deb packages resolving and installing its dependencies.

apt install gdebi-core

Next, use the wget cmd to download google chrome package.

wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

Install google chrome using the below command

sudo gdebi google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

You can find the Installed browsers under Application –>Internet
